Kim Jong-un announces famine threat
![]() 1548 Wednesday, 16 June, 2021, 22:45 North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during a speech at the plenum of the Central Committee of the Workers Party of Korea said about the possible shortage of food in the country, said on the air of the Japanese TV channel NHK, referring to the publication of the newspaper "Nodong Sinmun". “Due to the damage caused by last year's typhoon, the plan for growing grain was not implemented, and therefore at the moment there is a tense situation with the provision of food to the population,” the North Korean leader is quoted as saying. According to Kim Jong-un, who leads the TV channel, the extension of the quarantine measures imposed in the DPRK due to the coronavirus “led to a tightening of the struggle for providing the population with clothing, food, and housing.” In addition, Kim Jong-un allegedly called on the party and the people of North Korea to be ready for a new “difficult campaign”. This term in the history of the DPRK refers to the period of the 90s of the XX century when the country was experiencing a severe economic crisis, aggravated by mass famine.
