Tokyo Hit by Magnitude 6.1 Earthquake
![]() 1600 Thursday, 07 October, 2021, 19:06 An earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 6.1 caused significant shaking in Tokyo and surrounding areas on Thursday night local time. The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake hit at 10:41 p.m. local time with magnitude of 6.1. The epicenter was in Chiba prefecture just east of Tokyo at a depth of 50 miles. The agency said the worst shaking measured 5-plus on a Japanese scale that goes from zero to 7. Quakes with that amount of shaking can cause some property damage but generally don’t cause major casualties. Public broadcaster NHK said bullet-train service was halted to check for possible damage. It said there was no danger of a tsunami. |
