Russian President Vladimir Putin signed decrees recognizing the Kherson and Zaporizhia regions as independent territories, reports RIA Novosti. We are talking about Ukrainian territories that are under the control of Russia and in which a referendum on joining Russia was recently held.
“In accordance with the generally accepted principles and norms of international law, recognizing and confirming the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples, contained in the Charter of the United Nations, taking into account the will of the people of the Kherson region in the referendum held on September 27, 2022, I decide – to recognize the sovereignty and independence of the Kherson region “, the document states.
