"Azerbaijan occupied the territory of Armenia in 2022". Freedom House
![]() 980 Thursday, 09 March, 2023, 17:00 U.S. democracy watchdog Freedom House published an annual Freedom in the World report on Armenia and Artsakh. It is mentioned that The Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh, which also calls itself the Republic of Artsakh, has enjoyed de facto independence from Azerbaijan since a 1994 cease-fire agreement but after the war in 2020 it is still in danger and the people living there remain at risk of experiencing physical violence. The report stated that in September 2022, “Azerbaijani military forces entered Armenian territory. The escalation of the ongoing military conflict killed nearly 200 and injured more than 293 Armenian soldiers; three civilians were killed; and dozens of soldiers were taken as prisoners of war. The azerbaijani aggression along the armenian-azerbaijani border constrains freedom of movement along some border areas. Civilian settlements and buildings in Syunik, Gegharkunik and Vayots Dzor provinces were also targeted, causing significant damage and displacing thousands of civilians. While active hostilities lasted two days, the subsequent ceasefire has been regularly violated. Azerbaijani forces continued to occupy Armenian territory in 2022 and have frequently acted to impede the internal movement of Armenian residents, using threats of force against civilians to exert control”. Freedom House states that Azerbaijan is continuing to violate the principal rights of life, free movement, and other vital rights of residents of Armenia. |
