German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu shows that democracy in Turkey is in decline.

“Imamoglu’s arrest damages Turkey’s relations with Europe,” Scholz said.

Earlier in Turkey, opposition mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, considered Erdogan’s main rival, was arrested, along with 100 other officials, as well as 37 citizens who made provocative posts on social networks.
