Village destroyed by glacier collapse in Switzerland
![]() 1984 Thursday, 29 May, 2025, 16:28 Much of the village of Blaten in the Swiss canton of Valais has been destroyed by a glacier that broke off in the Alps, The Guardian reported, citing local media. According to Stefan Ganzer, head of the regional security service, “about 90% of the village is either covered in mud or destroyed.” He said the situation could get worse. Matthias Ebener, a spokesman for the local government, said at least one person was missing. The village of Blaten has about 300 residents. Residents were evacuated on May 19 after the geological service warned of a possible avalanche. |
