Ara Abrahamyan: "Pashinyan is looking for a candidate for a new Catholicos"

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is looking for a candidate to replace Garegin II as Catholicos, Ara Abrahamyan, the chairman of the Union of Armenians of Russia, told RIA Novosti.
“I know that he is negotiating with people who hold the position of Catholicos. He goes there and convinces them: "Speak out against (the church leadership), they will do everything for you," he said.
In his opinion, Pashinyan will not succeed, because the church is strong.
“The Catholicos has some accusations (that Pashinyan presents). That is none of his business. Who is the Catholicos? He is an elected person. Do you have something to say? You said it, and they will decide for themselves. "I will personally lead it." This causes misunderstanding among all Armenians,” the agency’s interlocutor explained.
The prime minister is driven by the fear that the church will unite voters against him in the elections, Abrahamyan added.
