At around 3:10 p.m. local time on Friday, Aug. 22, a portion of the bridge in China's Qinghai province fell into the water below when a steel cable broke, local outlets China Daily and China News Service (CNS) reported.
The cable failure caused a steel girder arch measuring about 354 feet to collapse while 16 workers were on site at the time, the outlets said.
Twelve people have since been confirmed dead and four remain missing, according to China Daily, which cited the local emergency command headquarters.
