Six persons were killed after a military helicopter crashed in Loreto, Agusan del Sur on Tuesday, the Armed Forces of the Philippines' Eastern Mindanao Command (EastMinCom) has confirmed.
“The search and rescue operations have led to the recovery of six bodies believed to be those of the pilot and crew members of the ill-fated Super Huey helicopter,” the military said.
It also said the identities of the victims are being withheld pending notification of their respective families.
It said the Super Huey aircraft was heading to areas affected by typhoon Tino to support disaster response when it crashed. "EastMinCom appeals for the public's understanding, prayers, and cooperation as efforts to locate the crew continue. Further updates will be provided once additional information becomes available," EastMinCom added.
The Philippine Air Force, in a separate statement, said the helicopter was part of a flight of four helicopters that departed from Davao to Butuan to conduct a Rapid Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis (RDANA) mission.
"Communication with the helicopter was lost, which immediately prompted the launch of a Search and Rescue (SAR) operation," it added.
PAF also said a thorough investigation is being conducted to determine the circumstances and cause of the accident.
Residents reported what appeared to be burned bodies at the crash site, but the military has yet to release additional details regarding the incident.
