European Council president to convene 'extraordinary meeting' of EU leaders
![]() 1085 Monday, 19 January, 2026, 17:31 The European Union will convene an extraordinary meeting of the heads of government of the 27 member states in the coming days, Council President Antonio Costa said on Sunday evening. The European Council meeting will be held "given the significance of recent developments and in order to further coordinate," Costa said on X. On January 17, US President Donald Trump announced that Washington was imposing duties of 10% with the possibility of increasing up to 25% on a number of European countries due to the situation around Greenland. Starting from February 1, 2026, tariffs will apply to Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Finland. |
