Trump: I’m not going through this to end up with another Khamenei
![]() 1057 Friday, 06 March, 2026, 13:12 US president Donald Trump told TIME he intends to play a role in shaping the next government of Iran. “One of the things I’m going to be asking for is the ability to work with them on choosing a new leader,” he says. “I’m not going through this to end up with another Khamenei. I want to be involved in the selection.” he said. According to the U.S. president, Iranians can choose a new leader themselves, but the United States must make sure that this person is "reasonable to the United States."
