Vardan Ghukasyan’s son-in-law, Avetis Arakelyan, who ran in the parliamentary elections on the “Strong Armenia” list and is ranked eighth on it, is reportedly facing a difficult choice but is inclined to take the mandate.
It should be noted that after Ghukasyan’s arrest, he has been performing the duties of Gyumri’s mayor. If he takes the mandate, the question of the city’s governance will once again remain uncertain.
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has repeatedly stated that snap municipal elections should be held in Gyumri. In response, factions in the City Council have argued that there are currently no legal grounds for dissolving the council.
