Franco Baresi has passed away at the age of 66, having celebrated his birthday on 8th May. AC Milan announced the news: "The history of Milan weeps for the passing of Franco Baresi. His example and his profound impact will forever be, like his number 6 shirt, an integral and fundamental part of the Club's DNA and journey. The condolences AC Milan extends to Franco Baresi's entire family are the same that every Rossoneri fan offers to themselves in such a difficult hour." Having undergone surgery for a pulmonary nodule in 2025, the legendary Rossoneri and national team captain had recently reappeared at San Siro and was also one of the last torchbearers to carry the Olympic flame at the opening ceremony of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. He played 719 matches for Milan, winning six league titles and three European Cups/Champions Leagues, while earning 81 caps for the national team and winning the 1982 World Cup.
