Politico has learned about the European Union's plans to impose sanctions against Russian athletes

The European Union (EU) is discussing possible measures to restrict the participation of Russian athletes in international competitions and impose sanctions against them. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on October 15, citing sources.
According to the publication, the relevant proposals are being considered by the European External Action Service. Among the possible measures is a reduction in EU funding for sports federations in case Russian athletes are allowed to compete.
In addition, the possibility of monitoring the distribution of income from sports broadcasts and putting pressure on companies that show athletes from Russia is being discussed. Another option is to limit the issuance of visas to Russian athletes.
Back in August, the Foreign Intelligence Service's press office reported that the EU was ready to do anything to prevent Russia from returning to international sports. It is specified that Europe may increase pressure on the IOC and sports organizations that will allow Russian athletes to compete. European politicians were also concerned about the decision of the International Olympic Committee to lift sanctions against the Russian Olympic Committee and Russian athletes.
