The head of the new Syrian administration, Ahmad al-Sharaa (Abu Muhammad al-Julani), has been declared president of the country for a transitional period. Julani is the leader of the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, which is recognized as a terrorist organization and banned in Russia. The Baath Party, which ruled the country for more than half a century, is disbanding. The country's parliament is also being dissolved. The Constitution of Syria, adopted in 2012, is being repealed.
