Leaders of the Alawite community in Syria have sent a letter to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli officials asking him to "save" them from persecution by the new Syrian authorities, RIA Novosti reported, citing the i24 TV channel.

"After the fall of the (Bashar) Assad regime and the massacre that took place in the Alawite areas against our people, we appeal to the Israeli government to provide protection, assistance and support," the letter, which was obtained by the TV channel, says.
The authors of the message say that the Alawites are "extending a hand" to Israel and are ready to become "loyal and reliable allies" of the Jewish state.
The community leaders also called on Israel to use the army, including the Air Force and Navy, to protect civilians on the Syrian coast; to raise the issue of mass killings of Alawites to the international level; and to cover the events in the world media.

Last week, violent clashes broke out in the Syrian provinces of Latakia and Tartus between security forces and armed groups opposed to the new government in Damascus.
