Rubio: "Politico's report on lifting sanctions against Russia is a lie"

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has denied a report by Politico that the White House is considering lifting energy sanctions against Russia as part of a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. Rubio wrote about this in a post on X:

"This is unequivocally false.

Neither Steve Witkoff nor I have had any conversations about lifting sanctions against Russia as part of a deal with Ukraine.

This is journalistic malpractice. If Politico
has an ounce of integrity they will fully retract this piece of fiction".

According to Politico, the president's staff discussed the issue of lifting sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline and other Russian projects in Europe, the main proponent of which is US Special Representative Steve Witkoff. The media outlet wrote that Witkoff instructed his subordinates to compile a list of all US sanctions against Russia in the energy sector.
