US President Donald Trump's announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Iran caught some senior officials in his administration by surprise, The New York Times reported, citing a White House source.
According to the source, Trump announced the agreement only after a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Iranian representatives, with whom he communicated through Qatar.
According to The NYT, Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani played a certain role in the ceasefire discussions. Among the US representatives participating in the discussions are Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff.
