Trump's special representative called the meeting in New York "an important signal." "I'm meeting with the Ukrainians in New York this week, and it's an important signal. We talk to the Russians every day," Witkoff said. He also touched on the meeting between Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, noting that the Kremlin leader wants to end the Russian-Ukrainian war.
