NATO Secretary General announces Greenland's readiness to receive US troops
![]() 1316 Wednesday, 07 January, 2026, 18:19 NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said on January 7 that Greenland was allegedly open to the deployment of additional US troops. Rutte, responding to a question about the possibility of convincing the United States to choose cooperation on Greenland rather than annexation, added that there are relevant agreements. "With regard to Greenland specifically, I know that discussions are fully open for the deployment of additional American troops there. There are no problems with that," he said in an interview with CNN. In addition, the NATO Secretary General said that the alliance has a common position on security issues in the Arctic and the US involvement in the region is considered justified. On the same day, former French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin stressed that if the United States captured Greenland, NATO leaders would have to admit a malfunction in the alliance. He also pointed to the right of NATO to say "no" to the policy of US President Donald Trump. On January 4, Trump said that it would be beneficial for the European Union (EU) from the point of view of defense if the United States owned Greenland. The head of the government of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, indicated on the same day that he considered the "repeated rhetoric" of the United States regarding the island to be disrespectful and unacceptable. On January 6, the leaders of Denmark, Poland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom in a joint statement indicated that only Denmark and Greenland should make decisions about the future fate of their territories. Later, the Reuters news agency reported that the Trump team had begun discussing options for acquiring the island. All important news is on the Izvestia channel in the MA |
