#Politico: Europe discusses new security alliance without U.S.
![]() 1016 Monday, 19 January, 2026, 18:37 Europe discusses new security alliance without U.S., Ukraine may play key role, APA reports, citing Politico. European officials are discussing the creation of a new security alliance that would operate without the United States but could include Ukraine, amid growing doubts about Washington’s reliability as a security partner, Politico reported. According to the publication, frustration in Europe has intensified following threats by U.S. President Donald Trump to impose punitive tariffs on any country attempting to prevent the United States from acquiring Greenland. European officials reportedly view this as a turning point in transatlantic relations. Politico noted that unless there is a radical shift in the U.S. approach, the situation could lead to a fundamental reshaping of Europe and alter the global balance of power. European countries are increasingly preparing to act independently on security matters, with Ukraine potentially playing a significant role in a future alliance. The report highlights that European states — including non-EU members such as the United Kingdom and Norway — have already spent much of Trump’s second presidential term cooperating in an effective U.S.-free format known as the “coalition of the willing,” created to support Ukraine. This coalition, Politico said, could form the foundation of a broader European security alliance as confidence in NATO and U.S. guarantees continues to erode. |
