A high-ranking Russian military officer was killed in an explosion in the Moscow region

A high-ranking Russian military officer was killed in an explosion in the city of Balashikha, Moscow Region, the official representative of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation Svetlana Petrenko said.
“According to preliminary information, Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik, Deputy Chief of the Main Operations Department of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, was killed in the explosion,” she said.
“A Volkswagen Golf car exploded near house 2 on Nesterov Street in Balashikha. According to available information, an improvised explosive device was detonated,” Petrenko added.
Law enforcement officers have opened a criminal case under the articles of murder and illegal trafficking in explosives.
The explosion occurred as Moskalyk was passing by a car with an explosive device attached to it.
The car reportedly did not belong to Moskalyk; it had appeared in his yard just a few days earlier.
