Russia is ready to offer Armenia options for developing nuclear energy, from small modular reactors to the construction of a new large-scale plant based on proven and reliable technologies. This was stated by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova.

"We see the interest of the Armenian side in continuing cooperation in the peaceful nuclear sphere. For half a century since the foundation of the Metsamor NPP, our specialists have been closely exchanging experience," Zakharova emphasized.

According to her, Rosatom, together with its Armenian partners, is currently working to extend the operation of the existing plant until 2036, and is also discussing the prospects for the construction of new power units.

Zakharova reported that the Rosatom leadership maintains regular contact with the country's government, noting that Russia records attempts by some ill-wishers from Western countries to discredit Russian-Armenian cooperation in the nuclear sphere.

In particular, the media are spreading false news about the imminent accident of the nuclear power plant or its alleged serious threat to the region.

“The Metsamor nuclear power plant was built specifically for Armenia, taking into account the seismological and climatic features of the republic, and the safety of the plant has been repeatedly confirmed by the International Atomic Energy Agency,” Zakharova said.
