Thailand Intensifies Hantavirus Screening After WHO Alert

Thailand has stepped up hantavirus screening and surveillance following a World Health Organization alert over infections linked to a cruise ship in the South Atlantic, Deputy Government Spokesperson Lalida Periswiwatana said Monday.

Lalida said no cases have been found in Thailand and the public risk remains low.

Authorities have ordered increased monitoring of travelers arriving from high-risk areas and instructed hospitals nationwide to strengthen screening for people exposed to rodents. Officials are also considering classifying hantavirus as a dangerous communicable disease under Thai law.

Hantavirus is mainly spread through contact with rodent urine or droppings. Early symptoms resemble the flu, while severe cases can cause respiratory complications. There is currently no specific treatment or vaccine.
