![]() 10435 Friday, 04 July, 2025, 17:10 The Ani Cathedral, located in the archaeological site of Ani in Turkey, is being renovated. This is reported by ermenihaber.am. The Turkish state news agency Anadolu reports that after the renovation, the Ani Cathedral will function as a mosque. There is absolutely no mention that the medieval city and church are Armenian. The Ani Cathedral is presented as the Fethiye Mosque. However, it is also noted that the architect of the cathedral is Trdat. “We also know Trdat as the architect who renovated the dome of the Hagia Sophia mosque in Istanbul. Trdat was invited from Ani to Istanbul, renovated the dome of Hagia Sophia, then returned to Ani and completed this structure,” says Muhammed Arslan, head of the excavations at the Ani archaeological site. Vergnis also reported that the renovation of the Ani Cathedral is underway in 3 phases, in cooperation with the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the World Monuments Fund. The second phase is scheduled to be completed this year. |
