Lawmaker says 250 schools, 300 mosques damaged during riots in Iran

"During these events, more than 250 schools, as well as 300 mosques, 90 religious educational institutions, and 2,221 vehicles belonging to law enforcement agencies and the Basij volunteer militia [of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps] were damaged," Tasnim news agency quoted him as saying. He also noted that more than 3,700 people have been injured during recent unrest. Unrest in Iran began on December 29 after street protests triggered by a sharp fall in the Iranian rial exchange rate, spreading across most major cities.Reuters, citing an anonymous Iranian official, reported that at least 5,000 people, including 500 security personnel, were killed in the protests. The human rights organization HRANA reported 3,919 deaths. |
