Global coronavirus cases top 4.6 million: Johns Hopkins University

SUMMARY
Confirmed COVID-19 cases have exceeded 4.6 million globally, with over 311,000 fatalities and more than 1.67 million recoveries, according to the latest count from Johns Hopkins University.
Here is what we know so far:
The Chinese mainland has 82,947 COVID-19 cases, of which 1,700 were imported. Also, 515 asymptomatic patients are under medical observation. China's COVID-19 death toll stands at 4,645.
The 13th National People's Congress (NPC) will open its third session in Beijing on May 22.
The U.S. is leading the world in both COVID-19 infections and deaths, totaling more than 1.46 million and over 88,000, respectively. The number of deaths in the U.S. is projected to exceed 100,000 by June 1, according to U.S. CDC director Robert Redfield. House of Representatives on Friday passed a three-trillion-U.S.-dollar Heroes Act bill.
Russian COVID-19 cases surpassed 272,000, the second highest number of coronavirus infections in the world after the United States.
Spain's government will seek a fresh extension of its state of emergency that will last "about a month" until the transition out of lockdown is completed.
Italy will reopen to European tourists from early June and scrap a 14-day mandatory quarantine period as lockdown measures ease.
