US threatens sanctions on anyone selling weapons to Iran
![]() 2286 Sunday, 18 October, 2020, 21:40 The US is prepared to impose sanctions on any person or legal entity that is involved in the arms trade with Iran, declared US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. In July 2015, Iran and six international mediators – Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, China, France and Germany – signed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which imposed a series of limitations on the Iranian nuclear program with the aim of exclude its possible military dimension, in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions. However, in May 2018, Washington broke the pact and activated several batteries of sanctions against Iran on the grounds that that country was continuing to develop nuclear weapons. A year after the US withdrawal, Iran began to gradually cut back on the fulfillment of its nuclear commitments given the lack of progress by the rest of the signatory countries to counteract the North American restrictions. The arms embargo imposed on Tehran by the United Nations expired on October 18, five years after the JAPAN was approved. |
