Council of Europe adopts resolution on creating special tribunal for Russia

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on Wednesday, June 26, adopted a resolution "Legal and human rights aspects of the Russian Federation's aggression against Ukraine" which discusses the creation of a special tribunal for Russia, according to the PACE press service and Telegram of People's Deputy Oleksiy Honcharenko.
"The PACE adopted a resolution "Legal and human rights aspects of the Russian Federation's aggression against Ukraine" on the creation of a special tribunal for Russia," Honcharenko said.
The resolution proposes the creation of a special tribunal for Russia based on the Council of Europe's agreement with Ukraine.
In addition, the document states the need to use all instruments to hold accountable those responsible for war crimes.
The resolution also calls for the PACE to recognize the Wagner Group as a terrorist organization.
Adopting the resolution, the PACE stated that the special tribunal established by agreement between the Council of Europe and Ukraine is currently “the best feasible option, in terms of legal basis and political legitimacy” for prosecuting Russia's political and military leadership for the crime of aggression.
A special tribunal for Russia
In January 2023, the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling for the establishment of an international tribunal for the crimes of aggression of Russia and Belarus against Ukraine.
Earlier it was reported that the international special tribunal against Russia could start working as early as 2024.
In early April 2024, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that 44 countries had supported the idea of creating a special tribunal for Russia.
