"The Armenian people continue to be the target of persecution and displacement in their historical homeland" - Spanish PM
![]() 523 Thursday, 24 April, 2025, 13:27 Recognition of the Armenian Genocide alone is not enough; it must be accompanied by effective mechanisms of prevention, accountability and restorative justice. This was reported by Spanish Parliament member John Iñárritu, according to Armenpress. The Spanish member of parliament noted that in recent decades the world has witnessed progress in recognizing the Armenian Genocide by many states and international organizations. With the definition of the term “genocide” by Raphael Lemkin, humanity had the opportunity to prevent further atrocities in the legal field, the member of parliament noted. Iñárritu considered the issue of the Armenian population, who were subjected to ethnic cleansing and expelled from their homeland as a result of Azerbaijan’s actions in September 2023, to be of concern. According to him, the Armenian people continue to be the target of persecution and displacement in their historical homeland. “The tragic manifestation of this is the recent forced displacement of the Armenians of Artsakh. These realities show that recognition alone is not enough. "It must be accompanied by effective mechanisms of prevention, accountability and restorative justice if we want to give real meaning to the words 'never again,'" Iñárritu added. |
