Chinese authorities have begun construction of a huge hydroelectric power station on the Yarlung Tsangpo River in the Tibetan Plateau, Western media reported.

The river is one of the largest waterways in South Asia, which also flows through India and Bangladesh and flows into the Ganges River.

According to calculations by the construction company Power China, the hydroelectric power station will be able to produce 300 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. The cost of building the hydroelectric power station is estimated at $167.1 billion.
