Man in Italy throws 20 gold bars in the trash by mistake

A 57-year-old man in the southern Italian region of Puglia accidentally threw out 20 gold bars into the trash, sparking a high-stakes search through tons of rubbish.
The story began in Torre Lapillo, a village of the seaside town Porto Cesareo, when the man mistook a tin container for rubbish, newspaper Corriere della Sera reports.
The man, whose identity has been kept private, had stored the small bars - valued at around €120,000 - inside a nondescript tin container.
During a moment of distracted house cleaning, he mistook the precious cache for common scrap and tossed it into the domestic waste bin.
Realisation
The error was only discovered after the local garbage collection truck had already completed its rounds. In a state of panic, the man rushed to the local Carabinieri station.
Officers initially met the story with a degree of skepticism, but after reviewing surveillance footage from the man's home, they confirmed his account.
The cameras clearly showed the 57-year-old carrying the tin container to the bin and the subsequent arrival of the waste management vehicle.
Needle in a haystack
The recovery operation was a race against time and technology. The waste from Porto Cesareo had already been transported to the Ugento landfill, where it was destined to be processed or buried under tons of other refuse.
Coordinating with the landfill staff, the Carabinieri tracked the specific compactor truck and isolated the area where its contents had been unloaded. In a painstaking search through mountains of garbage, the "treasure" was eventually located.
The tin container was found intact, with all 20 gold bars still inside.
Happy ending
The gold was returned to its legitimate owner, who, despite the shock, expressed immense gratitude to the Carabinieri and the landfill workers for their efficiency and honesty.
The story has quickly become the talk of the Salento region, serving as both a cautionary tale about home security and a rare example of a "needle in a haystack" search ending in success.
Local authorities have used the occasion to remind citizens to use bank safety deposits for high-value assets rather than deceptive domestic containers.
