Spain will allocate 50 million to the purchase of weapons from the US to reinforce Ukraine's defense

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, announced this Friday that Spain will add an additional 50 million euros to Ukraine's Priority Requirements List (PURL), a NATO instrument designed to facilitate European countries acquiring American weaponry intended for Ukrainian defense.
After reiterating Spain's support for Ukraine, the highest official of Spanish diplomacy specified that his country "has committed an extra 50 million euros" to the PURL mechanism to bolster Kyiv's defensive capabilities. This contribution is included within a global package of 124 million euros in investments and defense programs approved on Tuesday by the Council of Ministers.
Albares communicated this decision to the media within the framework of the NATO Foreign Ministers' meeting held this Thursday and Friday in Helsingborg (Sweden). The meeting is also attended by the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, and the allies are focusing their discussions on how to guarantee solid and sustainable long-term aid for Ukraine.
In this context, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has urged member states to assume a greater share of the military effort in favor of Ukraine, lamenting that "only six or seven" allies "are doing the heaviest lifting" so that Kyiv can resist the Russian invasion.
