Biden: There will be no cold war with China

On the eve of the opening of the G20 summit on the Indonesian island of Bali, most of the attention was focused on Joe Biden’s first personal meeting as US president with Chinese Communist Party Secretary General Xi Jinping. Also striking is the absence of Russian President Vladimir Putin at the talks with the leaders of the world’s largest economies.
Biden called the conversation with the Chinese leader open and honest. He found Xi Jinping “the way he always was – concrete and straightforward,” but at the same time ready to compromise on some issues.
Asked by reporters about a possible cold war between the US and China over the Taiwan issue, Biden said: “I am absolutely sure that there will be no new Cold War … I do not think that there will be any imminent attempts by China to invade Taiwan.”
Biden, he said, signaled that US policy on Taiwan had not changed and that the US wanted issues to be resolved peacefully.
“I am convinced that [Си Цзиньпин] understood exactly what I was talking about,” Biden added.
