The European Union’s top diplomat has warned that a weakened Russian president, Vladimir Putin, could pose a ‘terrible threat’ after Wagner’s coup sparked the biggest political crisis in decades.
“Putin’s weakness has created more danger. So we have to be very aware of its consequences,” said Josep Borrell ahead of a meeting of EU leaders in Brussels.
“Until now, we were looking at Russia as a threat because it was very strong and has used force in Ukraine. Now we have to look at Russia as a risk due to internal instability,” Borrell said.
Putin faced his biggest challenge since coming to power in 1999 when Wagner’s chief, Yevgeny Prigozhin, led a coup.

Meanwhile, EU chief Ursula von der Leyen said that the uprising would cause “tremors” and that it was important to double support for Ukraine, whether it was military capabilities or financial aid.

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said during a lunch with EU leaders on Thursday that Wagner’s actions exposed Russia’s “political crisis and division”.
But he cautioned that it would be premature to reach any final conclusions.

Stoltenberg said that he expects a new announcement of military assistance to Ukraine at the NATO meeting in Vilnius next month.Borel recommended the ‘Ukrainian defense fund’, saying that Europe should support Ukraine for the long journey ‘during and after the war’.

He said that the fund will support the modernization of the Ukrainian army and that the EU is committed to ensuring the security of the war-torn country.
