Ex-President of Kyrgyzstan Atambayev sentenced in absentia to 11.5 years in prison

The former president of Kyrgyzstan Almazbek Atambayev was sentenced in absentia to 11.5 years in prison. This was reported by Sputnik Kyrgyzstan on Tuesday, June 3.
"The Pervomaisky court also decided to confiscate the property of the former president and deprive him of state awards," the Telegram channel of the publication clarified.
Atambayev was found guilty of illegally obtaining land plots in the village of Koi-Tash in the Chui region of the country, corruption during the modernization of the Bishkek thermal power plant and organizing mass riots in the village of Koi-Tash.
At the moment, the ex-president lives abroad.
Atambayev headed Kyrgyzstan from 2011 to 2017. He was detained on August 8, 2019 after storming his residence in the village of Koi-Tosh. In June 2020, the court sentenced him to 11 years and 2 months in prison. In November of the same year, the Supreme Court of Kyrgyzstan overturned the decisions of the lower courts and sent the case for a new hearing.
