The World Health Organization on Monday called claims that the coronavirus began in a lab in China “speculative,” saying it has yet to see any evidence.
“We have not received any data or specific evidence from the US government relating to the purported origin of the virus. From our perspective, this remains speculative,” Dr. Mike Ryan, the WHO’s top emergency expert, told reporters.
Ryan added that the organization would be “very willing” to review any information from the US about the origin of the pandemic.
“If that data is available, it would be up to the US government to decide whether and when it can be shared but it’s difficult for WHO to operate in an information vacuum,” Ryan said.
